Abstract
Cervicogenic headache is a clinical syndrome in which headache is referred from any cervical structures innervated by the upper cervical spinal nerves. This pain from the neck converges with trigeminal afferents via the trigeminocervical nucleus and transmits to the oculo-fronto-temporal lesions. Laboratory findings and imaging techniques have limitations to find out which components of the neck are pain generators, and pharmacological treatments often fail to resolve symptoms. Therefore, interventional techniques are important in the diagnosis and management of cervicogenic headache. This paper describes the diagnostic criteria that have been published so far and core mechanisms of pain referral from the cervical spine, as well as describes various interventional treatments that are mostly done in the pain clinics.
